New 'Hugo' Poster: Asa Butterfield Meets Harold Lloyd [Moviefone Exclusive]

The brand new version of 'The Three Musketeers' might be the very first screen iteration from the 17th Century epic which includes flamethrowers, a number of airships, along with a Milady p Winter who bungee jumps and it has ninja-like weapons abilities. It is also in three dimensional. Apart from that, however, Paul W.S. Anderson's undertake the Alexandre Dumas classic is treading on awfully familiar ground. Since 1903, the storyline continues to be shot a large number of occasions, and not simply in France or Hollywood, but additionally in Mexico, Italia, the Ussr, Argentina, Egypt and Iran. You will find a minumum of one porno version. Therefore the 2011 film will need to fill some pretty large boots whether it really wants to join this list, which traces 'The Three Musketeers' through a number of its most memorable screen incarnations. 'The Three Musketeers' (2011) - Trailer No. 2 &bull 1921: This quiet version was not even close to the first (you will find four or five previous efforts), however it was the first one to have a star from the quality of Douglas Fairbanks, the premier swashbuckler from the quiet era. His D'Artagnan is not as memorable as his Zorro or Crook of Baghdad, but he's still an enjoyable experience. &bull 1933: John Wayne's version is known as 'The Three Musketeers,' but it is a modernization that's virtually unrecognizable being an update from the Dumas tale. The heroes are pilots fighting swarthy villains within an Arabian desert. Wayne appears like he'd prefer to be on the equine. &bull 1935: Walter Abel plays D'Artagnan inside a version generally considered lackluster, climax obvious the 1948 version required lots of inspiration in the film. Additionally, it required Ian Keith, who plays Richelieu henchman Rochefort both in movies. &bull 1939: For whatever reason, this musical comedy version is easily the most fondly appreciated 'Three Musketeers' of Hollywood's golden era. Don Ameche plays it straight as D'Artagnan, however the three veteran musketeers are performed through the Ritz Siblings. Future 'Titanic' star Gloria Stuart is available as Full Anne (strangely enough, her line is named). Allan Dwan, director of countless Fairbanks adventures, runs a handsome, lavish production. &bull 1948: Gene Kelly has all of the athleticism needed of the cocky, youthful D'Artagnan, and Vincent Cost creates a enchantingly evil Richelieu. (And yep, that's Angela Lansbury as Full Anne.) Kelly's swordfighting footage will get used again 3 years later within the opening sequence of 'Singin' while it is raining.A &bull 1952: A follow up known as 'At Sword's Point' features the grown kids of the musketeers. Cornel Wilde is D'Artagnan's boy, future 'Gilligan's Island' skipper Alan Hale Junior. may be the boy of Porthos (obviously). Inside a modern touch, Athos's daughter is fiery Maureen O'Hara, who proves just like skilled having a sword because the men. &bull 1973: This version is usually considered the very best, thanks largely to Richard Lester's typically antic direction, an imaginative script by George MacDonald Fraser (author from the Flashman books), as well as an outstanding cast. Michael You are able to is really a bumbling youthful D'Artagnan, the irrepressible Oliver Reed is Athos, a dashing Richard Chamberlain is Aramis, along with a wry Frank Finlay is Porthos. Raquel Welch is remarkably funny within the ingenue role as Constance. As well as for hissable villains, you cannot fare better than Faye Dunaway as Milady p Winter, Congressman Christopher Lee as Rochefort, and Charlton Heston as Richelieu. Raucous and lively, it created two sequels, getting back Lester, Fraser, and the majority of the same cast: 1974's 'The Four Musketeers' and 1989's 'The Return from the Musketeers.' &bull 1993: Produced by Disney, this not-bad version features an unlikely cast of musketeers: Chris O'Donnell (D'Artagnan), Charlie Sheen (Aramis), Kiefer Sutherland (Athos) and Oliver Platt (Porthos). One of the villains, Rebecca P Mornay may be the standout Tim Curry ought to be getting much more fun as Richelieu. The swordfighting is nice, the humor excessively broad, the dialogue anachronistically contemporary. Still, it's fun to look at Platt amusing themself or Sutherland brooding just like a rapier-carrying Jack Bauer. &bull 2001: It's known as 'The Musketeer' and centers mainly on D'Artagnan, though all appear a minimum of briefly, as performed by relative no-title stars. (Star Justin Chambers eventually made good on TV's 'Grey's Anatomy.') Because the full, the legendary Catherine Deneuve gives the development more class, dignity, and French-ness of computer warrants. Peter Hyams' movie is available mostly as any excuses for stunts and action set pieces it's notable because the first Musketeers movie to make use of 'Matrix'-style wire fu. For the reason that, it most likely presages this year's Paul W.S. Anderson version. Follow Moviefone on Twitter Like Moviefone on Facebook Follow Gary Susman on Twitter @garysusman RELATED

TV studios embrace full service

Lifetime's "Against the Wall" is among the shows that NBC U cable studio Universal Cable Prods. has sold to outside nets. RobertsAfter years of Balkanization among Hollywood's network-studio behemoths, the doors on the production side have suddenly swung wide open. Studios that count Big Three nets among their corporate siblings are increasingly venturing into the outside world with their wares. The movement is welcome news to the creative community, even as it promises to raise the competitive stakes. Functioning as a "full-service studio" is a mantra among the larger shops these days.Bob Greenblatt made it clear from the start of his tenure as NBC Entertainment chairman that he would expand the scope of the Peacock's network production well beyond NBC.He made good on that promise by recruiting the highly regarded Bela Bajaria from CBS to run the unit. She set up two hot comedy prospects at ABC and a drama at the Eye before she hit her one-month anniversary on the job. (Thankfully, Greenblatt also retired the studio's sterile-sounding Universal Media Studios moniker and returned to classic form with Universal Television.) ABC Studios earlier this month set up a comedy and a drama at NBC, among other outside projects. CBS TV Studios now counts NBCUniversal as a customer after landing a series order from USA Network for buddy dramedy "Common Law,'' from producer Jon Turteltaub.Perhaps the most unexpected burst of sales in the past few months has come from Universal Cable Prods., the NBCU cable studio formed in 2008 after Bonnie Hammer carved her own production infrastructure. UCP has not only nabbed series orders from non-NBCU outlets (Lifetime's "Against the Wall,'' MTV's upcoming "I Just Want My Pants Back'') but has a half-dozen comedy and drama scripts spread among Fox, ABC and CBS, plus projects for NBC proper. What gives? Why the change in the vertically integrated mindset that set in after last rites were read for the fin-syn rule (if you were born after 1985, look it up) in the mid-1990s?Beth Roberts, chief operating officer of UCP and exec veep of biz affairs for NBCU Cable Entertainment, thinks the push to build a more diverse portfolio of buyers is a natural evolution for network-affiliated studios. It took time for execs who were focused on running networks to understand the "different rhythms" of the studio business, she says. "The life cycle of a show's revenue streams are very different for a network and a studio,'' says Roberts, who was a top biz-affairs exec at the Peacock before shifting to the cable side. "The studios take the long-tail perspective. Your goal is to build a library of assets that are going to continue to pay out year after year."Where networks treat shows on a balance sheet as an immediate cost, studios treat them as an investment. The goal is to build a robust pipeline of shows that sell around the world and play on forever in reruns. Call it the "I Love Lucy'' standard."You need to feed that pipeline with whatever content you can, which means you need to go to as many buyers as you can," says Roberts. Other industry execs say that the need to make the most of a studio's roster of creative talent deals provides incentive to shop around. There are only so many slots that an affiliated network has to fill in a given season, and it pays for studios to keep their talent working. For years, doing an overall deal (for those lucky enough to command one) with NBC, ABC Studios or CBS TV Studios has come with the understanding that their development would be laser-focused on one network. (Twentieth Century Fox TV, of course, has been on the full-service course for many moons.)The silo mentality isn't going to disappear overnight, but the Glasnost effect demonstrated over the past year or so is an intriguing shift. There's also a certain validation for a young effort like UCP, which is run by an exec quartet comprised of Roberts, USA Network prexy Jeff Wachtel, Syfy original content prexy Mark Stern and Jerry DiCanio, production topper for UCP and Universal TV."When your mom tells you you're great, it makes you feel good," Roberts says. "When an outsider tells you you're great, then you know it's true." Contact Cynthia Littleton at cynthia.littleton@variety.com
